6 Safety Tips for Drivers

Keeping Drivers Safe

Every year, millions of American drivers will be involved in a car collision of some sort. Fortunately, the majority of incidents don’t involve casualties and most drivers and passengers walk away with minor injuries or nothing worse than a dented fender. To reduce the risk of being involved in a traffic accident, here are six safety tips from the team at Collision Centerz for drivers of all ages and skill levels.

Safety Tips:

1. Put down your cell phone

Distracted driving causes more accidents than many other factors combined. With the advent and popularity of hands-free mobile devices, there’s no reason for a driver to be handling a phone in traffic.

2. Focus on the road

In addition to cell phones, driving distractions come in a variety of forms. Eating, adjusting the radio, and talking to passengers will draw your attention from the road—where it belongs. Stay focused on the road and pay attention to signs around you. These safety tips will keep you and others around you safe if followed.

3. Maintain safe distances

Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of accidents and are easily avoidable, especially if you’re following tip number two—and keeping a sensible distance from the car in front of you.

4. Stay sober

One of the most important safety tips: Don’t drink and drive! If for no other reason than it’s incredibly irresponsible. You are not only putting your life at risk when driving drunk, but everyone around you.

5. Don’t skimp on the shut-eye

Getting behind the wheel when sleep deprived is almost as dangerous as drinking and driving. It’s estimated that driving after being awake for 20 hours or more is as risky as having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above the legal limit.

6. Acknowledge blind spots

Even if your modern vehicle is equipped with blind spot detection, there are still places you simply cannot see without eyes on all sides of your head. Always check your blind spots before merging into another lane. Better safe than sorry.
