Given the sheer number of vehicles on U.S. roads and highways, it’s not unlikely that millions of car accidents will occur this year. Although some incidents are caused by factors beyond our control, such as, weather conditions, the vast majority of accidents are the result of driver error. The team at Collision Centerz breaks down some of the top reasons for common car accidents.
Speeding is the number one cause of car crashes in the United States, by far. Moreover, speeding accounts for roughly 30% of all traffic fatalities. Driving faster than the posted limit might seem like a relatively harmless bit of thrill seeking but the statistics remain. Speed kills.
But of course, reckless driving also includes ignoring traffic control devices (i.e. running stop signs), refusing to use turn signals, and cutting off other vehicles in traffic. Blocking an intersection? That’s reckless. Any type of driving behavior that’s not in-line with the rules of the road is considered reckless driving.
Drinking and Driving
Speaking of reckless behavior, there’s simply nothing more dangerous and irresponsible than getting behind the wheel of a car with alcohol in your blood stream. Driving under the influence is the number one cause of auto accident fatalities and arguably the most preventable. Alcohol is involved in about 40% of all fatal car crashes.
Consider alcohol and its effects on the human body. It impairs your judgment while relaxing inhibitions. Many a bad decision has been made under the influence of alcohol. Now, add a 2,000-pound chunk of metal and glass moving at 55 miles per hour to the mix. This could be a fatal car accident.
Distracted driving ranks just below reckless driving in terms of auto accidents. The most disturbing issue with distracted driving is that we often don’t realize the dangers involved. Cell phone use, talking to passengers, daydreaming, and eating are among the most common forms of distracted driving.
Car crashes can happen in the blink of an eye—or more the point, in the same amount of time it takes you to change the radio station. Anytime you’re not paying attention to the road is a good time for bad things to happen. Giving in to distractions will put you and everybody else directly in harm’s way.
It’s true that weather and road conditions account for more than 20 percent of car accidents, but what about the rest? Well, that’s on us, the drivers. There would be far fewer accidents if people simply started driving responsibly. If you don’t want to add to the statistics, you’ll avoid all of the above driving behaviors.
